# A course introduction isn't a lesson

Someone choosing a course wants to know whether it fits. Someone taking it wants help with the subject. Give those two jobs separate videos, with a clear purpose for each.

## Choose which learner you're speaking to

Use the overview to explain the actual audience, format, and participation route. For a lesson, choose an existing unit with one learning objective. A worked example and a relevant comprehension question can show whether the point is understood. Attendance and demonstrated understanding should remain distinct.

## Before writing the script

Bring the curriculum, approved teaching material and program terms, with a reviewer who knows the subject.

Check which terms your audience already knows and who will update the film when the program or process changes. Use clearly fictional people and records in examples.

## Check what people take away

Put the overview beside the course offer and the lesson inside the course. Ask prospects about format and expectations; ask learners to work through the specific task. Those checks serve different purposes. Keep both films grounded in the actual program and its approved teaching material.
