How to delete, reorder or extract pages from a PDF

Choose which PDF pages to keep, change their order or extract a smaller document. Use visual thumbnails and understand why this is not secure redaction.

To remove an unwanted page, make a new PDF containing the pages you want to keep. In CapriVideo’s Organize PDF tool, you select page thumbnails and arrange them in the order they should appear. The original file stays unchanged. Processing runs in your browser without uploading the document or asking you to register.

This works for shortening a handout, removing a duplicate page or putting a cover back at the front. Do not use page deletion to securely remove confidential information. For that task, use a dedicated redaction workflow that also addresses hidden document content.

Delete pages using their thumbnails

  1. Open Organize PDF and choose your document.
  2. Click the thumbnail of an unwanted page and choose Delete page. Repeat for other pages you do not need.
  3. Select Export PDF and check the page count and preview.
  4. Download the new document and open it to confirm the selection.

If a six-page document has an unwanted page 3, select the third thumbnail and delete it. The result has five pages. To remove the first and last pages instead, delete those pages one at a time, checking the content after each change. Undo restores a mistaken deletion during the session.

Count from the first physical page in the file, including covers and blank pages. A printed “Page 1” may actually be the third page in the PDF. The sidebar reflects the current page order, not the numbers printed in the document. Click a thumbnail to inspect the actual page before removing it.

Reorder pages or extract a section

To move page 3 to the front of a five-page PDF, select its thumbnail and move it earlier twice. The sidebar updates to show the new sequence. You can move a page later in the same way. Its content and any additions made in this session travel with it.

For an extract, use Split PDF. Mark the checkboxes for pages 2, 3, 4 and 7, for example, and choose Keep selected pages. Those four pages remain in the workspace and are saved together in one PDF when you export. The tool does not create separate files or a ZIP for every page. Repeat the process with the original file if you need several different extracts.

Selecting a thumbnail opens that page for editing; its checkbox selects it for extraction. These are separate actions, so check the marked boxes before keeping a selection. At least one page must remain. You cannot duplicate pages with these controls.

Why a selection may be rejected

The input must be a flat PDF, no larger than 25 MiB or 200 pages. A 300-page source is outside the limit even if you only want two pages from it. Encrypted PDFs, forms, digital signatures, annotations, bookmarks, layers, accessibility tags and attachments are unsupported.

Some PDFs share image or drawing resources between pages. Removing a page can otherwise leave its unused resources inside the new file. CapriVideo conservatively rejects selections when retained and omitted pages share these resources. A sensible selection can therefore still produce an unsupported-file message when you export. Choosing those same pages again will not solve that document-level limitation.

The check does not make this a redaction service. Adobe’s redaction documentation describes permanently removing marked content and dealing with hidden information. Follow a dedicated process when disclosure of removed information would matter.

Review the new page sequence

Compare the first and last pages with your intended selection, then inspect each transition. Existing printed page numbers and references do not update when pages move. A sentence saying “see page 8” may need changing in the source document.

If you need to add another document afterward, follow the guide to combining PDFs. Keep the original selection notes until you have checked the final downloaded copy.
